Project overview: Since 2008, the Institute's research in Uzbekistan has taken the form of field surveys. Using GIS technology, systematic archaeological mapping of the Sherabad District has been underway. Our first pilot survey took place in 2008, and led to systematic archeological mapping in the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Overall, 130 archaeological sites were recorded by the surveys, and we visited nearly 50 of them. We focused on sites both newly discovered through satellite imaging and sites previously published in earlier literature. The survey was carried out in various locations in part selectively and in-depth (Danielisová, Stančo, A. Šajdulláev), in part also through field surveys of larger areas (P. Tušlová et al.), with interesting results.
In September 2010, the Czech-Uzbek expedition carried out the third part of survey of Sherobod District in Surkhandarya province in South Uzbekistan. The expedition is a partnership between Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, Termez State University in Uzbekistan.
